Our Annual Review 2007 covers our global organisation and presents the financial information, all our projects, publications and achievements. Wetlands International clearly demonstrated in 2007 the important role it can play as a science-based organisation that can act as a global witness - bringing key facts from the field to the attention of policy-makers. A good example of this was our role in highlighting and quantifying the role of wetlands and especially peatlands as the worlds’ biggest natural terrestrial carbon stores – and demonstrating that through restoration of damaged wetlands we can cost-effectively reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and even halt and reverse them, through carbon sequestration. Equally our role in a number of global and regional projects addressing the avian influenza threat has been to provide data on waterbirds and wetlands so as to contribute to the understanding of how the disease spreads, analyse risks and help countries to make preparations for an outbreak.

In November 2004, Wetlands International confirmed its ten year Strategic Intent and established 5 year targets, linked with four major Goals. In this document, we bring together an overview of the achievements of our work in the period 2005-2007, towards the 5 year targets under each Goal area. The data on our achievements from across the office network were collated on a web-based information system. This information base and personal communications were used to compile this document. Our progress over 3 years is presented, target by target, highlighting one key achievement, some of the other significant achievements – and by providing some comment on the status and outlook for our work in each case.

The annual Review 2006 of Wetlands International presents our achievements, more than 100 projects worldwide and dozens of new publications. The establishment of Wetlands International offices as legal entities in Malaysia, South Asia and South America in 2006 was an important step in reinforcing our worldwide legal structure. We also witnessed growth in the portfolios and influence of some of our smaller offices, including Argentina, Mali, India and China. Our office in Dakar, Senegal, began to play a significant role in coordinating implementation of major projects and policy initiatives across Africa, such as the Wetlands and Poverty Reduction and the Wings over Wetlands flyway projects. Our outreach and presence in Africa increased significantly during 2006 as we developed collaborative working relationships with many partner organisations, including development and aid agencies.
