Another year and a fresh “Migratory Birds for People” - newsletter to start with!

A lot of work is being done in protecting our migratory birds by implementing international treaties, by increasing enhanced scientific research and improvement of the management also by training programmes.

The Woodcock and Snipe Specialist Group is a network of woodcock and snipe specialist (both scientists and non-scientists) concerned with the study, monitoring, management and conservation of the woodcock and snipe species populations.

The "Migratory Birds for People"-network is developing well and we have now started engaging the ‘scientific world’ with the network-programme. This newsletter provides an update news from the network and progress made during the meetings in September and 24th of October in Genk in Belgium (side meeting during the Eurosite / Europarc Annual Conference) and the launch of the Takern Centre in Sweden.
 

AWC Newsletter #19, of Dec 2012 brings you up to date on progress of the AWC network over 2012 and looks ahead at 2013.

Dimulai dengan edisi kali ini, WKLB akan setia dihiasi informasi-informasi seputar Teluk Banten dan Nusa Tenggara Timur, hal ini terkait dengan salah satu kegiatan Wetlands International - IP yang difokuskan pada kedua wilayah tersebut melalui program Partner for Resilience (PfR). 

The newsletter jointly published by Wetlands International South Asia and Loktak Development Authority focuses on changing land use in Loktak Lake complex. The issues also presents an overview of Water Management Plan for the lake and an update on implementation of short term action plan for conservation and management of Loktak and associated wetlands.

yang terkandung dalam tema tersebut. Lahan basah, hutan dan air adalah tiga komponen sumberdaya

alam yang terangkum dalam satu kesatuan ekosistem utuh, sehingga pemanfaatan dan pengelolaannya

haruslah terpadu dan utuh pula. Hutan khususnya hutan lahan basah tentu tidaklah akan tumbuh baik bila

habitat lahan basahnya tercemar dan terdegradasi, begitu sebaliknya lahan basah menjadi terancam bila

tegakan hutan di atasnya rusak atau hilang.

The fifth volume of newsletter Chilika, jointly published by Wetlands International South Asia and Chilika Development Authority, provides an update of various activities being undertaken for its conservation and wise use.  The issue focuses on management planning , and has a lead article on the management planning framework for the wetland ecosystem. Also contained within this volume are summaries of the Fisheries Resource Management Plan and the advanced acoustic technology introduced by the Chilika Development Authority for monitoring of the Irrawady Dolphins. East Kolkata Wetlands form the backbone of food and ecological security for Kolkata city. The first volume of the newsletter, jointly published by Wetlands International – South Asia (WISA) and East Kolkata Wetland Management Authority (EKWMA) presents an introduction to the wetland system, and also outlines the management action plan formulated for its conservation and wise use. The main purpose of this newsletter is to keep coordinators of national waterbird monitoring schemes in Europe, North Africa, Southwest and Central Asia up-to-date with developments in the International Waterbird Census (IWC). It is also intended for counters and all others interested in IWC. For those who are behind with data submission, we wish to kindly request that you send waterbird count data up to and including January 2010.

This newsletter covers outcomes that have resulted from the UNEP-GEF African-Eurasian Flyways Project also known as the Wings Over Wetlands Project (WOW). The newsletter highlights the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the lead project partners to strengthen the conservation of waterbirds and wetlands, the launch of the Flyway Training Kit which is a capacity building resource that provides a flyway approach to conservation of migratory waterbirds and their habitats and the Critical Site Network tool that provides an access to information on waterbird species and their sites covered by the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA).

This newsletter covers some available Single Species Action Plans; reports on two trainings: one in Maputo, Mozambique (on a national wetland and waterbird monitoring course) and the other in Limbe, Cameroon (on a flyway scale capacity building in wetland and waterbird management course). There are two calls: One requesting waterbird experts to participate in the consultation process of the Critical Site Network Tool development and the other requesting participation in the Slender-billed Curlew survey and searches.

The fifth volume of newsletter Loktak, jointly published by Wetlands International-South Asia and Loktak Development Authority, focuses on the managing Athaphum, a destructive form of fishing using vegetation enclosures which presently choke the entire lake. Recently we have published the 1998 AfWC report, which will be with you very soon, if a little late. This delay is due to our period of transition with the AfWC programme. With the opening of the first Africa Office in Senegal, our headquarter in Wageningen (the Netherlands) has been decentralising the activities of the Africa Programme. Consequently, I have completed an initial training in Wageningen to gain a better working knowledge of the programme, more especially the AfWC and management of the Wetlands International database. This was followed by the editing and publication of the 1998 AfWC report here in Dakar and at last, the transfer of the AfWC database to the West Africa Office.

The IWRB Cormorant Research Group was officially founded at the Third European Cormorant Conferent on Cormorants in April 1993 in Gdansk, Poland. Its main aim is to facilitate the exchange of information on both ecology and biology of the different species of cormorants worldwide and on possible conflicts arising between cormorants and human fisheries's interests.
