A common language to accelerate landscape recovery
Date: 04/06/2021
Venue: Online
Scaling up large-scale landscape restoration initiatives requires a common language and a practical systemic approach for actors to come together and generate lasting benefits.
Join our virtual event in light of the launch of the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration on World Environment Day. Together with the business and investor community, governments, ecosystem restoration experts and practitioners, we will discuss how we can create opportunities for integrating business objectives in large-scale restoration action that seeks multiple returns for people, biodiversity and climate.
This event introduces an approach that has been road-tested over seven years across different ecosystems. The holistic 4 Returns Framework has been refined by Commonland, Landscape Finance Lab and Wetlands International and aligned with the 1000 Landscapes for One Billion People Initiative. A report on the holistic 4 Returns Framework will be launched.
We will also hear inspiring stories of system change and impact from global and local stakeholders who are applying this methodology in their landscape contexts.
“Landscapes are complex: diverse groups of people, interests, ideas and cultural meaning are attached to land. The 4 Returns Framework interlinks ecology, community spirit and long-term economic sustainability at the landscape level.” – report 4 Returns Framework

This event is organised by
WWF Landscape Finance Lab
The Lab is an organisation, founded by WWF, with a mission to support practitioners, governments, corporates and financial institutions to incubate sustainable landscapes that generate impact at scale.
Wetlands International
Wetlands International is the global non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wetlands. Its vision is a world in which wetlands are cherished for their beauty, the life they support and the resources they provide. Its mission is to inspire and mobilize society to protect and restore wetlands for people and nature.
Commonland
Commonland Foundation is an Amsterdam-based, internationally operating organisation working on large-scale and long-term holistic landscape management and restoration. And we’re on a mission: to transform 100 million ha of degraded landscapes before 2040 together with other landscape partners, farmers, policymakers, companies, and investors. To make this happen we have developed the 4 Returns Framework. A practical and holistic approach to transform degraded ecosystems into vibrant landscapes and communities.
“Concern about the environment has moved decisively from niche to mainstream. But current attempts to address the biodiversity and climate crisis continue to fail. We need new approaches, rooted in systemic, long-term solutions, optimism and the exhilaration inherent in rebuilding living landscapes, our life support system, around the world.” – report 4 Returns Framework
