‘Scaling up the Power of Wetlands for Ambitious Climate Action’
Join Wetlands International as we lead breakout discussion, ‘Scaling up the Power of Wetlands for Ambitious Climate Action‘, part of the session, ‘Protecting people and restoring water resources and ecosystems’ during the UNFCCC Race to Zero Dialogues, Water Action Day.
As the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement approaches, more ambitious climate action is required to keep us within the threshold of 2˚C of global warming. With emissions from the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector contributing around 20-24 percent of global GHG emissions (second only to energy), countries are looking to change how they use and manage land and water to achieve the deeper emission cuts needed for enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Safeguarding and restoring wetlands—lakes, rivers, marshes, peatlands, deltas, and coasts—can deliver a “triple-win’: reducing existing carbon emissions, avoiding future ones, and building the resilience of ecosystem services that can support communities at a time when global health and livelihoods are under pressure. Nature-based solutions like wetlands are vital because even if emissions are significantly reduced, the most vulnerable people will still face hazards and disaster. Unless we revive ecosystems, land degradation will continue.
Join Wetlands International CEO Jane Madgwick together with a selected panellists from civil society, government, the financial sector and business for lively discussion around scaling up wetlands in climate action by enhancing public awareness and working with communities; ensuring a solid knowledge base, targets and monitoring; integrating the co-benefits of wetlands into cost-benefit analyses; and avoiding trade-offs arising from climate policies that can lead to low biodiversity value.

The Race to Zero November Dialogues is a series of virtual dialogues that will take place 9-19 November on climate-related topics, aiming to keep the momentum going on the work on climate change despite the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The Dialogues are organised by the High-Level Champions for Global Climate Action. Each virtual dialogue is to be organised by a key partner, under an umbrella programme curated by the High-Level Champions. The lead partners for Water Action Day are the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA).
