Peatland conservation and restoration
A large portion of peatlands in Russia remains untouched, but several million hectares of peatlands, especially in densely populated part of European Russia, have been drained to be used for agriculture, forestry and peat extraction.
When peat extraction and agriculture on peat soils became unprofitable in the 1990s, many of those areas were subsequently abandoned resulting in large-scale land degradation and frequent peat fires. Our project with Wetlands International, Michael Succow Foundation, Institute of Forest Science RAS, and Griefswald University has restored hundreds of square kilometres.
This leaflet looks at years 2011—2018 in the project.
