Become a Member
Our members are national governments and NGOs who share and support our goals, contribute annually through dues to the Wetlands International Association, and work with us to safeguard and restore wetlands.
Why become a Member?
Our Members join because they care deeply about wetlands, and believe that Wetlands International has an important role to play in advocating for their conservation and restoration. They engage with us on issues and initiatives of common interest – policy agendas, wetland assessments, science and facilitating practical action. They are consulted on and formally adopt our Strategy, as well as Wetlands International’s annual plans.
How to become a Member
We are actively seeking new Members to support our mission and trying to expand our members base. Currently, we are only accepting membership applications from governments and NGOs.The support of our Members – both financial, through the annual dues, and also through the credibility and contacts they provide – is invaluable to Wetlands International. If you are interested in becoming a Member, please contact the secretariat at [email protected]. Countries and NGOs are represented by one or two delegates, who serve as the contact points with that Member.

Become a partner
We work in partnership with many different partners, including NGOs, private sector parties, and governments. We are also official partners of several global intergovernmental conventions. We are a reviewer of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPPC, and we are an official International Organization Partner of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
For much of our advocacy work, field level wetland work and research, we join forces with other non-governmental organisations for greater impact. As a member of the Ecoshape consortium, we participate in the public-private partnership Building with Nature, which aims to stimulate sustainable coastal engineering, making use of the natural protection provided by ecosystems. This initiative brings together Ministries in Indonesia, a consultancy agency, knowledge institutes, dredging companies and local communities in Indonesia.
Another example is Partners for Resilience. This alliance between the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Red Cross Netherlands, Wetlands International, Red Cross Climate Centre, Care Netherlands and Cordaid helps communities build resilience to natural hazards often aggravated by climate change and environmental degradation.
Private sector partners
We work with the private sector, including companies whose operations directly and indirectly affect wetlands. In some instances, we develop formal partnerships to work on a specific issue or geographic area. For more information on how we partner with forward-thinking corporate companies that seek to improve their sustainability and collaborate on mutual aims, see our company engagement brochure or contact Ward Hagemeijer, Head Business and Ecosystems, at [email protected].
Why become a partner?
Partnerships are key to achieving impact. Together with partners we work to achieve shared goals and objectives in conservation and wise use of wetlands. The various ways that we work in collaboration with partners to achieve impact can be found in the descriptions of our approach to Healthy Wetlands Nature, Vibrant Coasts and Deltas, Blue Lifelines in the Desert, Water Stores from Mountains to Sea, and Peatland Treasures.
Our Partnership Policy Statement clarifies our partnership principles, what we consider as partnerships, what we have to offer in partnerships and what it means to be a Wetlands International partner.

Join a Specialist Group
Specialist Groups are formed from volunteers who share a common interest. They have a technical advisory role to our organisation and may also join forces in terms of advocacy on key issues. Each group has a Coordinator for information exchange between members. See our current Specialist Groups.
