Although the most numerous of the world’s flamingos, the Lesser Flamingo is classified “Near Threatened” in the 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, indicating it is likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future. This plan has been officially adopted by the governments that are parties to both the African Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) and the Convention of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), also known as the Bonn Convention.
The plan was largely developed by members of the Wetlands International-IUCN SSC Flamingo Specialist Group which will also be instrumental in its implementation.
