Strengthening corporate water replenishment
New paper lays out need for dialogue to address challenges with current replenishment programmes
Freshwater replenishment has been a key strategy for corporate water stewardship, with over 40 Fortune 500 companies committing to replenishment targets since 2007.
While this approach has unlocked funding, fostered collaboration, and driven water conservation efforts, significant challenges remain.
A new working paper — Strengthening Corporate Water Replenishment: Leveraging lessons learnt to maximise the benefits for all, co-authored by Conservation International, TNC, WaterAid, Water.org, Wetlands International and WWF — explores these challenges from the perspective of both NGO implementers and corporate funders.
It highlights the need to refine replenishment efforts, align expectations, and integrate replenishment into broader water strategies.
Rather than providing solutions, this paper invites the water stewardship community to engage in a structured dialogue to overcome these barriers. By addressing these challenges, we can enhance the impact of replenishment projects on ecosystems, communities, and long-term sustainability.
